  • Conserving Energy Conserves Money

Posted on June 27th, 2011 Joy No comments

Saving money on energy bills does not require new appliances but rather a few minor changes around the house. It is surprising how much money these small changes will save and how much energy will be conserved as well.

First, get new window shades or blinds; they will not only look great but will save a good chunk of money. Window shades will block out the sunlight which will in turn keep the room at a cooler temperature. With a cooler room, the air conditioner does not have to work as hard and does not have to be running quite as long. The air conditioner is responsible for most of the energy bill and if it is not running as often then inevitably the electric bill will be lower.

Caulking is also a great way to conserve energy. Many doors and windows have small cracks around the edges and those cracks and holes will allow air to leak out, which makes the air conditioner work harder to cool the room. By sealing up these holes, the air conditioner will not run as often and will conserve energy and money.

Turning off and unplugging electronic appliances is another way to conserve a few dollars. When appliances are left on, they obviously use electricity but they also draw energy when left plugged in. By unplugging appliances, they will not be constantly drawing energy and in turn the electricity bill will decrease.

The temperature of a room can also make an electricity bill skyrocket. During the day, the temperature should be left at 78 degrees and when no one is home the temperature should be left at 85. Thermostats should also be set to auto as opposed to fan because when set to auto the fan will run only when necessary as opposed to running consistently.

With these tips and tricks the energy bill will significantly decrease all while being sustainable and conserving energy.

  • Design a Room Around a Map

Posted on June 3rd, 2011 Joy 1 comment

In recent years design conversations have revolved around things like texture, story, and making a room pop. Anyone who has spent any time perusing design magazine or watching home design television shows knows that there are a number of different ways to approach designing a specific room. Designers, both professional and amateur, will start with a color palette, a specific theme or style, or they may decide to design an entire room around a specific object.

A map is a great source of inspiration. There are actually entire lines of
interior design maps being created for use as accessories and accent pieces. But these types of maps are usually afterthoughts. They are brought in to support the dominate idea or theme that is driving the room’s design. Taking a map as the main inspiration is a completely different process.

Some people will start out by choosing a single piece from a collection of decorative maps . It may appeal to them because of the colors and shapes or because they have an association to the place begin depicted. It is also possible to take a map that has significant personal meaning and make that the inspiration for the room design. In either case, the map will be the source for determining everything from paint color to the textures and shapes used in the furnishings. Everything will be inspired by, reflect, and complement the original map. Since each map is different and each person’s interpretation of the map will be unique, it is a great way to get a truly original room design.

  • Essentials of Car Ownership

Posted on May 28th, 2011 Joy No comments

The first thing a new car owner needs to know is that their new vehicle is going to be an investment in money as well as time. They should be prepared to take responsibility for not only their car and insurance payments , but for keeping their vehicle in top condition. This will make them feel better about their car and it will extend the life of various components, which translates to fewer repairs down the road.

A good example of this is having regular checkups. Some of these are inspections done by the driver while others will require a mechanic. Most cars should have routine checkups at 30,000, 60,000, and 90,000 miles. The mechanic will make sure that all the systems are in working order and will let the owner know if they need to replace brakes, belts, filters, the battery, or other parts. Drivers should also get in the habit of regularly inspecting their tires and wheels for proper inflation as well as small punctures or cracks. Likewise the body of the car should be inspected for major scratches or dents that need attention.

In addition to inspections, there is regular maintenance associated with car ownership. A car needs regular oil changes and to have other fluids checked and topped off. It needs to have the tires rotated. Air filters have to be replaced according to the manufacturer’s schedule. Head and tail light die out. Wiper blades need to be replaced. Eventually even those brand new cooper tires will wear out their tread.

Car owners need to be prepared to deal with any and all of these situations, because, sooner or later, they will all happen.

  • Leaving Work Due to a Disability

Posted on May 18th, 2011 Joy No comments

Society tends to have an ambivalent view of disability. On the one hand there is genuine compassion and sympathy for those who are permanently injured or disabled due to illness. Charities, religious institutions, and volunteer organizations depend upon this compassion in order to successful serve their needy populations. However, on the other hand there is popular image of people milking an illness or even faking an injury in order to obtain disability benefits and get out of having to work. It is this latter view that makes many people who suffer from a legitimate disability feel embarrassed about their condition and to downplay their situation.

The majority of those workers who are forced to stop working due to a disability are more deserving of compassion than suspicion or disdain. In addition to dealing with the life changing nature of their illness or injury, they are having to cope with real physical pain and emotional distress. They are also likely to face obstacles when they attempt to obtain long term disability benefits to help their family survive financially.

Anyone who is leaving work due to a disability needs to work closely with their company’s benefits coordinator to make sure they are filing the proper paperwork to protect their job and to obtain the necessary insurance benefits. They need to find out if they qualify for workers compensation if the injury was acquired on the job and whether their company offers long term disability payments. They may need to file for FMLA leave or switch their insurance while they are out of work. If the disability is permanent, they will likely have to terminate their job and deal with things like retirement funds and applying for federal disability benefits.

  • Throw a Great Stanley Cup Party

Posted on May 1st, 2011 Joy 1 comment

Hockey fans are engaged in the highlight of their year: Stanley Cup season. While the actual final championship is at least a month away, the playoffs have already begun and many people are having viewing parties to cheer on their favorite teams. Conference semifinals and finals are still ahead as well as the championship series, so there is still plenty of time to plan a great Stanley Cup party.

Start with the invitations and decorations. You want to set the mood for your party — whether it is rooting for a specific team in the playoffs or simply celebrating hockey as a sport. Judicious use of hockey clipart and slogans on the invitations will set the mood before guests even arrive. Carrying that theme into the decor is essential. Team colors and mascots are appropriate as are posters of players and real or faux hockey gear.

Sports food is fairly universal, with buffalo wings, pizza, chips and dips being universal favorites. If a team is from a town known for a specific food, such as Philly cheesesteaks or Chicago-style pizza, it’s a good idea to include those on the menu. Desserts can be used to carry out the theme, with a cake in the shape of a hockey puck or cookies with little hockey sticks on them.

Hosts may want to provide goodie bags for childrens parties and maybe rent a mascot costume for the event. For adult parties, encourage guests to wear their favorite team gear from an NHL Shop and maybe create a hockey trivia challenge to be played during commercial breaks.

Move over guys, tungsten rings aren’t just for men any longer. Women are enjoying the beauty and uniqueness of these rings and they are becoming a high demand item in ladies wedding rings. This isn’t a surprise, nor was it unplanned as designers have had women in mind from the beginning and have created unique styles of rings for the feminine taste. Tungsten carbide rings are beautiful and have their own identity hue and various additional metal and precious gemstone ornamentation. The designs typically attract a sophisticated visual preference. The men’s rings are known for having a distinct masculine appeal while maintaining a genuine charm. A single gold line placed through the center of the ring adds a special dynamic and sets off the rich dark hue of the metal.

The women’s rings are an entirely different subject, however. The diverse visual aspects of the metal provide for rings that can appeal to all tastes. Many women prefer the darker tone, though the high polished bright and shiny silver appearance is extremely popular too. One thing to keep in mind is that due to the extreme hardness of the metal, tungsten rings are not able to be sized, like gold or silver. So while you’re getting an extremely beautiful and enduring ring, you will definitely want to know the right size before you make your purchase. These tungsten wedding rings might be the true product that is strong enough for a man, though it is certainly made for the delicate tastes of a woman.

  • Patients Services Improve with Electronic Prescriptions

Posted on March 24th, 2011 Joy No comments

E-prescribing will make the process of prescribing and picking up medicine much more simple and efficient, that is, in offices where it hasn’t already done so. The script will be sent electronically to the pharmacy where the patient can go immediately after his or her appointment and this will save them time and effort. This makes the practice of writing out the prescription and sending it off with the patient to then drop off at the pharmacy a potential thing of the past.

The consumer will simply go from the doctor’s office to the receiving pharmacy , which should save them a great deal of trouble and time. And this is particularly helpful when the patient is actively sick and just wanting to go home and go to bed.

This is just one of the ways in which new electronic health record software is changing the dynamics at medical offices as well as the efficiency in some of their services. The software, which was primarily developed as a more economical and efficient data storage and retrieval system includes options for billing as well as patient scheduling and face sheet documentation. The prescription services are one of the major ways in which patients are realizing the tremendous benefits the software is offering them.

  • What Do Dental Assistants Do?

Posted on March 20th, 2011 Joy 1 comment

Virtually anyone who has ever walked into a dentist’s office has encountered a dental assistant. This professional should not be confused with that of a dental hygienist. Hygienists usually undergo more extensive training and are able to employ their expertise at a higher level. Dental assistants, however, are trained to assist dentists in a number of administrative and treatment scenarios. In general, dental assistants work in the front office and behind the scenes and assist the dentist with procedures, rather than directly treating patients.

In some states, dental assistants can get by with on the job training, but more and more states are instituting licensing or certification for these positions. This requires that individuals attend dental assistant school and meet other licensing requirements. It is important that anyone considering this career familiarize themselves with the requirements of their state.

Common tasks that are handled by dental assistants include administrative jobs such as setting appointments, handling insurance forms, patient billing and maintaining patient charts. Behind the scenes they may be called upon to expose and process x-rays , sterilize equipment and prepare instrument trays. They may be responsible for preparing patients for exams, including taking blood pressure and conducting oral inspections. They are also expected to be able to assist the dentist directly by handing off instruments or holding suction devices during procedures. They may also take impressions or even fabricate provisional crowns.
