New Improvements Dealing with Drug Addictions
Posted on August 10th, 2010 No commentsOpium , heroin, marijuana and cocaine for centuries were used for medicinal purposes until high addiction resulted in devastating problems leading to society placing a ban on the substances. Drug addiction is today classed as a progressive disease, which is treatable but not curable. If the drug addiction is not treated right away, it may lead to serious harm to not only the user, but to the community at large.
Today, modern drug rehabilitation centers have been far more successful than in previous decades at treating drug addiction. Understanding of the obsessive and compulsive nature of the addiction through modern neurological studies has helped rehabs with treating the addict with better therapies by targeting the craving first, then with cognitive behavioral therapies after.
Drug addiction is only the symptom of a deep underlying problem that the drug abuser suffers with silently; hoping drugs or alcohol will either dull the emotional pain or physical pain only makes the issue worse. It can take years of sobriety in order for these initial troublesome issues to be dealt with and to eventually be overcome and it’s during this period where most recovering addicts relapse. Professionals in the rehabilitation industries now have a new understanding of the reason why most relapses occur within a month of sobriety and are better armed to help the recovering addict through this very difficult time.
The statistics for a recovering drug addict to stay sober are still grim, but new understandings of how the brain works has vastly improved and can have lasting results for an addict once they leave any institution dealing with recovery.
