Conserving Energy Conserves Money
Posted on June 27th, 2011 No commentsSaving money on energy bills does not require new appliances but rather a few minor changes around the house. It is surprising how much money these small changes will save and how much energy will be conserved as well.
First, get new window shades or blinds; they will not only look great but will save a good chunk of money. Window shades will block out the sunlight which will in turn keep the room at a cooler temperature. With a cooler room, the air conditioner does not have to work as hard and does not have to be running quite as long. The air conditioner is responsible for most of the energy bill and if it is not running as often then inevitably the electric bill will be lower.
Caulking is also a great way to conserve energy. Many doors and windows have small cracks around the edges and those cracks and holes will allow air to leak out, which makes the air conditioner work harder to cool the room. By sealing up these holes, the air conditioner will not run as often and will conserve energy and money.
Turning off and unplugging electronic appliances is another way to conserve a few dollars. When appliances are left on, they obviously use electricity but they also draw energy when left plugged in. By unplugging appliances, they will not be constantly drawing energy and in turn the electricity bill will decrease.
The temperature of a room can also make an electricity bill skyrocket. During the day, the temperature should be left at 78 degrees and when no one is home the temperature should be left at 85. Thermostats should also be set to auto as opposed to fan because when set to auto the fan will run only when necessary as opposed to running consistently.
With these tips and tricks the energy bill will significantly decrease all while being sustainable and conserving energy.

Design a Room Around a Map
Posted on June 3rd, 2011 1 commentIn recent years design conversations have revolved around things like texture, story, and making a room pop. Anyone who has spent any time perusing design magazine or watching home design television shows knows that there are a number of different ways to approach designing a specific room. Designers, both professional and amateur, will start with a color palette, a specific theme or style, or they may decide to design an entire room around a specific object.
A map is a great source of inspiration. There are actually entire lines of
interior design maps being created for use as accessories and accent pieces. But these types of maps are usually afterthoughts. They are brought in to support the dominate idea or theme that is driving the room’s design. Taking a map as the main inspiration is a completely different process. Some people will start out by choosing a single piece from a collection of decorative maps . It may appeal to them because of the colors and shapes or because they have an association to the place begin depicted. It is also possible to take a map that has significant personal meaning and make that the inspiration for the room design. In either case, the map will be the source for determining everything from paint color to the textures and shapes used in the furnishings. Everything will be inspired by, reflect, and complement the original map. Since each map is different and each person’s interpretation of the map will be unique, it is a great way to get a truly original room design.

Feel Safe at Home
Posted on January 23rd, 2011 No commentsIn order to feel safe at home several factors have to be met. The first is that you have to have a home. You have to have something invested in the property that connects you to it and makes it important that you secure it.
The next factor is the location of the home. If you live in the most crime ridden neighborhood in the city, you are much more likely to be the victim of some sort of home invasion, robbery, or other crime. Living in a nearly crime free neighborhood gives you much greater peace of mind.
Since most people live somewhere in the middle, it’s important to take some steps to keep your home safe. This can be accomplished by installing a simple security system with alarms, lights, and home safes . Guard dogs, security fences, and elaborate door stops are probably more than you need. You can always upgrade to bigger and better systems if you find the crime rate growing in your area
A third factor is having adequate homeowners or renters insurance . This will protect you in the event that there is a break in or after a natural disaster. It will ensure that you have the refunds to replace key items that are lost.
In the end, even if all these factors are considered, peace of mind is ultimately a mental exercise. You can actually feel safe in a war zone and be filled with anxiety in a house that locks up like Fort Knox. So take all these factors into account, but also make sure that you have a realistic understanding of your safety instead of freaking out at every possible scenario.

Does Your Family Need a Pool?
Posted on December 11th, 2010 No commentsAs the temperatures start to fall and prove that it is, in fact, winter time, it’s very tempting to start imagining how wonderful it would be to have your very own backyard pool to cool off in next summer — and every summer after. It’s a seductive fantasy that has lured many a home owner into an elaborate, yet ultimately worthwhile, construction project. Before you run out and hire a Houston pool builder , you’re going to want to sit down and really think about whether your family needs a pool.
Installing a swimming pool can be a great investment in the resale value of a home. That is provided you take the time to hire a good builder, use quality materials, and put a premium on maintaining the pool in the years until you sell. Most people think of a pool as an investment in their family’s enjoyment while they are still in the home. Will you family actually use the pool or will it become a pretty feature that you spend money cleaning and maintaining year round?
If fitness is an issue, swimming, water aerobics , and other forms of aquatic exercise are good alternatives to hefty gym membership fees. Likewise, a family that spends every afternoon and evening cooling off in the pool instead of running the a/c in the house is a cost effective trade off. The final arbiter of whether or not a pool is “worth it” is whether or not it will get used — whether for laps, exercise, cooling off, or entertaining friends as well as yourselves — and only you can make that call.

The Fountain in the Garden of Love
Posted on August 21st, 2010 No commentsWhen being in a garden starts to feel like something very familiar, one is not on new territory, or in the realm of new experience. Gardens have a way of waking up that part of the human spirit that connects to the forces of nature. It’s an innate quality, and one that many people forget until they experience it for the first time.
Gardens do have a way of speaking to that part of the soul. Nature has been part of the divide on the other side of culture or technology, and is also equated with the things of intuition and emotion. It’s not by chance, then, that there are so many references to the Garden of Love in the history of art. Love seems to be at one here with the landscape, because it comes from an elementary source that’s as deep as the roots and the fountains .
In most of these depictions, the garden is the place of joy, luxury, and sensual pleasure, and is therefore well-suited to love. In William Blake ’s version, however, there’s a different story. Here, the garden reflects an entirely different world view, where nature and desire are ordered and controlled. The power of his work lies in its ability to both confirm the generally accepted view of gardens, and to turn it on its head.

Blending Modern and Traditional
Posted on May 1st, 2010 No commentsOften when it comes to style and home design, homeowners feel like they need to pick one theme and stick with it. While for the most part that it true — blending oriental or a casual beach theme probably wouldn’t work — there are some exceptions. But then this shouldn’t be a surprise since design is all about breaking the rules and making the look your own.
One of the oldest design styles and looks for your home is traditional. There are a variety of ways to put this design together; larger more classic furniture, warmer colors, even large solid wood shutters on the windows. All of these elements together give your room a warm, inviting feel.
For many the complete opposite of traditional is modern . Extreme modern design includes very little furniture that is often small and geometrical; bold colors like black, white, and red; and slick artwork on the walls. Though it looks very new and, well, modern, it often feels like your walking into a museum.
As different as these two styles are, there are a few things that you can do to blend them together and give your room a warm yet up-to-date look. One way to add a modern flare to your traditional room is by addressing the windows. This will work especially well if you have big windows or an arcadia door. Next Day Blinds company offers panel track blinds in a variety of colors and materials. They are similar to vertical blinds in that they hang all the way to floor but they have a track at the bottom that keeps them all together. To add a more traditional feel to your modern room, try some warmer or lighter colors. It will help alleviate the starkness of the room.
The key to designing any room is being willing to try new things . Not everything is going to work and look good, but by playing with new ideas you’ll not only come up with something that looks good but is also uniquely yours.
